MY HAIR STROKES ARE FOOLING ME!

Have you ever tattooed hair strokes on one side of your client’s brow, and as you work on the other side, some previous strokes seem to disappear? This can leave you saying to yourself, “My hair strokes are fooling me!” You may be thinking some of those hair strokes are missing. Trust me, you may want to hold off before drawing more hair strokes where you know you’ve already placed them. Be patient! Add numbing to the tattooed brows while you WAIT for the next 15-20 minutes continuing to draw in areas you haven’t drawn in yet

I’ve spent over 25 years doing tattoo corrections for clients coming to me wanting smudge, placement, and color corrections from their tattoos being overworked, colors going purple, pink, blue, green, charcoal, and brow placement needing attention. I purposely trained with specific people to get educated on how to correct this because we could see the growing need for advanced training even 30 years ago.

Brows especially can fool you when it comes to placing these fine strokes, and many people have not gotten this advanced education to prevent these concerns for both the technician doing these procedures, and your clients.

Two of the best pieces of advice I received when these finer tipped needles were being perfected around 2010 to make amazing brows was: 1. Less is more. We would leave an island of skin in between each stroke to allow for any spread in our clients skin. Otherwise, our strokes could run together creating a really long unintended stroke. 2. Be patient as you move slowly with a light touch on each stroke, but getting familiar with putting the needle into the correct pocket of the dermis on your clients. This will prevent deep, dark strokes that have spread, and in time turn a silverish color that is not pleasing, or creating a smudging rather than a hair stroke appearance.

Hair strokes take years to perfect in order to get that natural, timeless appearance. And thank God we can use a conservative approach to give our clients, and ourselves more comfort as we build our skills. The best advice I can give my colleges out there, “Allow yourself grace as you are practicing to perfect the approach that works best for you.” This is an art, and no artist wants to have their work needing correction.

We all know as artists, touch ups average 2-4 years depending on each clients skin, health conditions, and blue ray exposures. Here is a client who came back to us exactly 3 years from the date she first had her brows tattooed with the hair stroke technique. She came back for her 6 weeks touch up when she initially had them tattooed, and now she has returned for her 3 year touch up.

In this picture you can see when she came in they have faded very naturally. We are going just 1/2 level darker with this touch up as well as the same hair stroke technique, and placement.

You can see in the picture below the strokes I made on her right brow, towards the bridge of her nose weren’t fully coming through on her skin, I chose to wait the 15 -20 minutes before making any more strokes because I knew I had already made strokes that weren’t fully showing up.

I ended up making a few more strokes, and saved the rest for after her healing to see what happens over the next 5-6 weeks. These strokes may, or may not reappear over these few weeks, and they will lighten to a soft, medium brown. It’s absolutely better to add strokes than have to remove smudges, right? YES, we do have a very conservative, timeless approach to our tattooing here at Profiles by Alisa, this has served us, and our clients beautifully over the past 30 years.
